Undress the Stress: A DIY Boudoir Night In for Couples
A DIY boudoir night in is all about reconnecting and doing something fun and flirty together. It’s a night where you get to put yourselves first. Spend uninterrupted time with one another, rekindle the fire and passion, or just simply have some adventurous fun together.
Nothing quite beats the complete boudoir experience that we offer as experienced photographers, but who’s to say that trying to do it yourself (DIY) can’t be fun. Here’s some helpful tips and tricks that will help you make the most of your DIY boudoir night in.
Set the Mood 🔥
Pick a night when you’ll have the space and time to focus without interruptions. Once you’ve got your evening carved out, create a vibe that makes you feel good.
Put your phone on Do Not Disturb
Play your favorite music — something that gets you in the mood
Take your time doing your hair and makeup
Dance, sing, pose in front of the mirror — have a glass of wine if you feel like it
The whole point is to have fun and enjoy one another’s company.
Choose a Comfortable Setting 🛋️
While boudoir shoots are often associated with the bedroom, that’s not a rule you have to follow. Find a spot where you feel relaxed and free to express yourself. A couch, an accent wall, the floor — anywhere you feel at ease
Wear what makes you feel powerful and confident (lingerie optional)
Make choices that feel authentic to you
This shoot is about feeling good in your own skin — no pressure, no pretense.
Keep It Simple with Equipment 🌿
Leave the fancy gear to us. For this experience, your phone and some household lamps will do just fine.
Use your phone’s back camera for better quality (avoid the selfie lens)
Prop it up on a tripod, or stack a few books if needed
A couple of lamps can create great lighting — no need for a studio setup
For soft, flattering lighting:
Place one light 3-6 feet away at a 45° angle between the front and side of your face
Want a gentler, low-contrast look? Add a second light further away
Pose with Intention ✨
Don’t worry about being a model. Focus on movement and shapes that highlight your natural curves and favorite features.
Drop a shoulder, put a hand on your hip, or tilt your head
Twist your upper body slightly toward the camera
Unsure what to do with your hands? Gently touch your body — it can look and feel empowering
Pro tip: If timing the camera feels awkward, take a video while you pose and later grab screenshots of your favorite frames.
Make It a Celebration of You 🥂
At the heart of it, this is more than a photo shoot — it's a moment of connection with yourself and/or with your partner. As adults, we don’t really get many opportunities to give ourselves attention, know how we’re feeling, or do things just for fun. Let this be your reminder that you and your relationship are worthy of attention, affection, and a little camera time — just because.
